चिपको आन्दोलन पर्यावरण के संरक्षण के लिए चलाया गया एक आन्दोलन है। इसके अंतर्गत पेड़ों के संरक्षण हेतु प्रयास किये गये थे। इसे चिपको आन्दोलन इसलिए कहते हैं कि पेड़ों को कटने से बचाने के लिए महिलाएँ तथा अन्य लोग आन्दोलन के दौरान पेड़ों से चिपक जाते थे। इस आन्दोलन की शुरुआत 1973 में वर्तमान उत्तराखण्ड के गढ़वाल जिले के गाँव रेनी से हुई थी। इसकी पृष्ठभूमि यह है कि गाँव वाले अपने कृषि उपयोग के लिए अंगू वृक्ष (Ash Tree) को काटना चाहते थे, लेकिन जिला प्रशासन ने उन्हें इसकी अनुमति प्रदान नहीं की। लेकिन कुछ ही समय बाद सरकार ने खेल का सामान बनाने वाली एक निजी कम्पनी को इन पेड़ों को काटने की अनुमति प्रदान कर दी। जिसका गाँव वालों ने बहुत विरोध किया। जब कम्पनी के ठेकेदार पेड़ काटने के लिए गाँव में आये तो महिलायें पेड़ों से चिपक गयीं तथा कम्पनी के ठेकेदार पेड़ों को नहीं काट सके। इस प्रकार चिपको आन्दोलन की शुरुआत हुई। बाद में यह आन्दोलन उत्तराखंड के समूचे टेहरी गढ़वाल और कुमायूं क्षेत्र में फैल गया। इस आन्दोलन में सम्पूर्ण उत्तराखंड में पेड़ों को बचाने के लिए महिलाओं और अन्य लोगों ने बढ़-चढ़ कर भाग लिया। इस आन्द...

These powers instead of being concentrated in the hand of one person, were now separated and assigned to different institutions- the legislative. The Constitution of 1791 vested the power to make lows in the National Assembly, which was indirectly elected. That is, citizens voted for a group of electors, who in turn chose the Assembly. Not all citizens, however, had the right to vote. Only men above 25 years age who paid taxes equal to at least 3 days of a labour's wage were given the status of active citizens, that is, they were entitled to vote.
